Beautiful New Look for the Colonial Zone

Colonial Zone Santo DomingoIn recent months, a huge project has begun to make the Colonial Zone a more attractive tourist destination, while also improving services to the area’s residents. The main tourism area near Plaza Colon, along Calle Isabel la Catolica and Calle Arzobispo Merino is beginning to look stunning thanks to the gorgeous, very wide stone sidewalks, cobblestone-type streets, underground electric cables and more. Residents in the Colonial Zone are also actively participating in a government sponsored program to repaint the exteriors of the homes and businesses, and the result is an even more picturesque area. Finally, automobile traffic will be restricted somewhat  to create a more tourist friendly environment. Please look at the Before and After photos… it is really incredible.

The Colonial Zone, a UNESCO designated world heritage site, is a lively neighborhood featuring gorgeous 16th century Spanish Colonial architecture, nice parks and a potentially fabulous commercial shopping street open to pedestrians only, El Conde. These improvement efforts are sure to enhance the attraction of the Colonial Zone as a world class tourist destination and encourage further renovation of the area’s buildings.
Kudos to the Ministry of Tourism and President Danilo Medina for undertaking such an admirable and much needed redevelopment project!
