Santo Domingo Baseball

Quisqueya
Baseball is an important part of Dominican culture and is by far the most popular sport in the country. The Dominican Republic has produced some of the world’s great players, including Sammy Sosa, Adrian Beltre, Vladimir Guerrero, Albert Pujols and Pedro Martinez. There are two Santo Domingo baseball teams (Tigres del Licey and Leones de Escogido), and a total of six teams in the country. The 2012 baseball season runs from October 14 to December 21.

You can catch a game at Estadio Quisqueya. Tickets can be purchased at the stadium and are usually still available right before the game. However, tickets may be harder to come by for games between Licey and Águilas (from Santiago) and Licey and Escogido. Prices are reasonable, ranging from $2-$20 US. Refreshments are available both outside and inside the stadium.

Going to a Santo Domingo baseball game is a great way to meet Dominicans and learn more about the country’s culture. You may even get to see the next great player before he joins the Major League.

In general, games start at 5:00 pm on Saturdays and Sunday, 7:30 pm on weekdays.
